Wood Newton were working with Hopkins Architects from an early stage of the National Tennis Centre project. The building has been organized around a large open courtyard which has been positioned to retain a large London Plane tree.
The main building includes six indoor courts with a gymnasium, state-of-the-art sports science and medical facilities, along with changing and accommodation facilities. The administration areas are located in a new pavilion building on the other side of the tree. The two areas are linked by a building which contains the main reception and café space and a covered walkway which runs around three sides of the courtyard.
Initially, we designed, manufactured and installed the external façade to the main and administration buildings. Of the 3,400m² of external surfaces there were 124 3.5m wide by 3.5m high timber framed, glazed sliding doors. The remainder of the façade consisted mainly of louvred panels or fixed glazed screens. Also around the perimeter of the façade were large aerofoil shaped, solid timber blades that act as brise solei.
Internally, we carried out all the joinery fit-out comprising of doors and frames, laminated wall panels, kitchenettes, cupboards and bespoke lockers. All items were made to the exacting standards required of such a prestigious project and were completed within a short programme.
Wood Newton Limited received ISG InteriorExteriors Trade Contractor of the Year Award in 2006 as recognition of their skills and commitments on this project.
